MmaTsebe Site

Why MmaTsebe is special

  • It is beside the Mbudi River, a permanent waterway in the Khwai area of the Okavango Delta. This water supports a rich ecosystem and attracts wildlife such as elephants, hippos and lechwe.

  • It sits near Moremi Game Reserve, giving the area an important connection between protected wilderness and the Khwai community landscape.

  • The landscape combines water, woodland and floodplain habitats, which is a major reason the Khwai area supports diverse wildlife.

  • There is a strong cultural connection to the Okavango. The Bayei have historically lived closely with the Delta's waterways, using mokoro, fishing, hunting and gathering as part of their traditional way of life.

  • The name MmaTsebe also has a wildlife story: one safari source says the camp was named after a well-known female leopard that lived in the Khwai–Moremi area and successfully raised several cubs.

A Bayei/Okavango identity around the Matsebe site, the strongest themes would be water, mokoro, reeds, wildlife, ancestral heritage and the relationship between people and the Delta. That gives the identity a meaning deeper than simply using an African-looking symbol.
